One of the World’s top tennis stars and highest paid female athlete, Maria Sharapova has admitted to failing a drug test at this years Australian Open.
She offered an apology claiming she “made a mistake.
The 28yr old professional tennis player admits she’s been taking the drug” Meldonium” since 2016.
Meldonium is a drug used for treating heart ailments but can allegedly “boosts endurance” in some who take it. Maria admits she has been on this drug since 2006 for medical reasons.
She also claimed that she was unaware that the drug had made its way to the World anti doping agency’s banned substances list this year.
Sharapova had become an instant star after winning Wimbledon at just 17 years old. She then went on to win four more grand slams but in the years to follow, injuries took its toll on her body.
As the investigation is still on0going, She has agreed to fully cooperate with investigatiom aware of possible consequences. She is however subject to a provisional suspension
