A man convicted of sending a mail bomb that exploded at a western Pennsylvania post office three decades ago has been arrested on a parole violation after apparently living in the woods after failing to return to a halfway house.
Randall McFadden, 60, walked away from a halfway house after completing a 30-year sentence in the 1985 blast at the Warrendale bulk postal center.
Officials said McFadden had tried to mail a pipe bomb to a woman in New York but it went off in the postal facility, causing extensive damage but no injuries. He was later also charged with possession of an explosive device while incarcerated, officials said.
Authorities said they found McFadden on Saturday at a hospital where he was taken after a hunter found him in the woods, severely dehydrated and malnourished, conscious but unable to walk. He had given hospital authorities a fictitious name and was being treated for conditions related to his exposure while living in the woods.
He was released in October and sent to the Renewal Center in downtown Pittsburgh, where supervisory deputy U.S. marshal said he had been on lock down for the first five days. On the sixth day, he was allowed to leave for job-related purposes but never returned. Source: NY Times
